Restoring Dignity at Mabhentseni Primary School
A Sanitation Crisis in Rural Eastern Cape
The pit toilets at Mabhentseni Primary School in the rural Eastern Cape were built in 1989. Today, many of these facilities are full, broken, or missing proper walls and roofing. In some cases, learners are forced to relieve themselves outside because the toilets are no longer usable.
This situation is not only a health risk—it is a matter of human dignity. Every learner deserves access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities in order to learn in an environment that respects their wellbeing.
A Call That Reached PASETA
A young lady named Nomfundo reached out to PASETA seeking assistance for the school. Her call highlighted the urgent need for action, and it inspired a broader effort to mobilise support for the learners of Mabhentseni Primary School.
PASETA is now calling on South Africans, community leaders, and organisations to join this initiative and help build new, safe toilet facilities for the school.
Our Goal: Completion by Youth Day
The aim is to complete the construction of the new sanitation facilities by 16 June – Youth Day. This symbolic date reminds us that investing in young people means ensuring they grow up with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
